I loved this one so much I bought four! No wonder they blew past their goal in just a few days and went on to raise more than ten times their crowdfunding goal!
As noted by the company, “GoBe is the first and only wearable device that automatically measures the calories you consume and burn, through your skin.”
They do not directly measure the sugar in your blood and of course there is no invasive needle or pricking required. Instead a sophisticated algorithm determines glucose levels by measuring the impedance at different points on your skin and combining that with other data including heart rate, blood flow and your body’s movement. There is a detailed description of the technology and research on their site, in the form of a PDF document. I am not sure how they compensate for elevated or lowered blood levels in diabetics and hyperglycemics, since metabolizing the calorie intake is the issue in that case. There is a passing reference to this in that document, but no explanation.
One caution – the product ship date is considerably delayed. Promised to backers in June, it still had not shipped as of August 2014.
They call it the world’s largest lost and found!
Tile is a tiny gadget that works on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect with other Bluetooth devices. Apparently, you just attach, stick or drop your Tile into any item you might lose: laptops, wallets, keys, guitars, bikes—you name it. You can then beep it with your phone, if you want to find it. The App even remembers where it last saw your tile (and what’s attached to it of course). You can even see if you are getting closer or further from a Tile via the app.
And here’s the best part! Tiles talk to each other. So, even if you are far away from your tile, you may be able to track its location through an entire network of tiles! That really is genius!
Downside: Unbelievably it only works with iOS devices. And I don’t have any of those. They have a lame statement on their website that Android’s support for Bluetooth is not good enough – I find that really hard to believe. Perhaps it is true, but then there are other devices using BLE on Android successfully.
Tiles cost between $15 and $20 depending on how many you buy. A strange contradiction I noticed though is that you can buy a pack of 12 tiles ($179.55 or just shy of $15 each), yet you can only add 10 tiles to an account.
They recently raised $2,681,297 (134 times their goal) on SelfStarter, which interestingly is a crowd funding platform that they started because KickStarter turned them down!
This is a brilliant idea! I have so many credit cards, I can’t carry them all around – My wallet would become more like a box!
Watch the video first…
Of course, there is a downside – if you lose this card, all your credit cards could be compromised. It needs a security device – maybe a thumb print reader or some such protection that will not allow it to be used without the person being present.
