What’s a Raspberry Pi?

Want to build your own Xbox like console? It’s easy with the Raspberry PI! OK, maybe you want something a little more mundane – for example connecting your refrigerator or Espresso machine to the web so you could control it from the other side of town (or the other side of the earth). Just because!

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming.

People have done some really fun stuff with the Raspberry Pi. The examples above aren’t facetious, a guy named Mark Moran used the Pi to web-enable his previously-unconnected espresso machine.  And there have been wackier uses of this sweet little computer like making a dog food dispenser, a coordinated firecracker launcher, a home PABX system – the list is ver-r-r-y long!  Some people have used it to create toys such choppers and cars.  Someone has made a wearable display using Video Eyewear and the Pi.

And you can really experiment with all kinds of stuff, because it is only $35, so if you break it, it’s not going to take your company under.
